The Great “Libero”

Traveling with my Mitsubishi Libero family may be one of my favorite pass times in life. Let me rewind a little to give you some in site as to what I have been up to for the last several weeks.

Week 1:

NH ->Los Angeles ->Auckland, NZ

Total travel time: 30 hours. It was great fun. I slept most of the flight to Auckland so the travel was not as bad as I had anticipated. With the IFSA- Butler crew I spent a week just outside of Auckland at Shakespear Regional Park… quite possibly one of the most gorgeous places in the world. We proceeded to get as wet, muddy, and exhausted as we could and ate more ‘kai’ (maori for food) as our bodies allowed for. We stayed on a Moari and slept with 40 people in one room… needless to say someone snored and no one slept.

A lot more happened, but I want to jump to more recent, exciting adventures.

Week 2:

Auckland -> Wellington -> Dunedin!

The coldest place on earth, unless you are a penguin and live in ant artica…

I shivered every night and lost a million pounds, then got very sick… that sounds horrible… well it happened, but there were a ton of amazing adventures! We hit the town running… A load of crazy Americans wreaking havoc all around Dunedin.

A few ridiculous sights: 15 young Americans, K-mart bags filled with pillows and blankets, trying to flag down “call only” taxis. I was embarrassed a lot in the first week in Dunedin.

Week 3:

Willowbank, North Dunedin -> Sketchy hotel, Wanaka

We bought a car! Two of my friends from home, two new friends and I all bought ourselves a beautiful 1994 Mitsubishi Libero… I thought I would never have the chance to own such a beast. We decided it was time to purchase a car after hitching a sketchy ride with a local Kiwi 4 hours to Wanaka. This was a good decision. 350$ and the beautiful thing was ours.

Our second week to Wanaka we decided it was time to do a few photo shoots. We rose at 4am to get an early start to the 4 hour drive from N Dunedin to Wanaka. We left before the sun rose, had purchased car insurance by 8:30 am, and were well on our way to one of the best weekends of my life. The first day John Murphy competed in the Cardrona games. He did amazingly considering he had been puking the entire way to Wanaka (don’t chow down on bacon chowder from a can, no good comes of it.) The park at Cardrona is tight for so early in the season! Two fun size, bite size jumps and a few fun boxes to slide made for a fantastic afternoon. On Saturday we grabbed egg & pepper croissants at the local Kai eatery and were off for Snowpark, NZ. The rain came down hard but their park was so fun we did not stop riding until the lift was shut down on wind hold. We all learned a lot of new spinny tricks on their perfectly groomed rails/boxes/mini jumps. These mountains are SO much fun. Both have great parks! Different atmospheres, but each so attractive and unique.

Sunday brought sunshine and a willingness to hurl ourselves off back country booters. Well, a 5 foot back country kicker that we built with out new coal shovel. The snow was sticky and horrible on the access road to Cardrona, but we wanted to get shots so badly and it seemed like the place to do it. With blue sky, monstrous mountains, and amazing friends we had the most epic day shooting photos and hiking. Aaron Blatt shot the pictures, John Murphy and Noah did some amazing riding and I fell on my head several times. The jump was horrific and we did a really awful job building it correctly.

Jake Payson, the fifth member of our Libero family met us promptly at 5pm under the large fruit statue. The four of us slept soundly only waking to laugh at absurd comments as Jake drove us the 4 hours home.

maybe sal paradise was right

The lake seems too blue to be real, lapping up against the greener than green grass. I suppose thats just what happens after a thunderstorm; everything comes alive. I am envious of people who know precisely what they want to do when they ‘grow up’, but I bet they are envious of my free mind, with little direction. I know roughly where I want to go, roughly what I want to do, and roughly how I am going to get there. However, I never really know for sure. Next week I leave for Dunedin, NZ. In high school I can recall profesizing that someday, somehow, I would live in NZ. Only knowing that it was beautiful and somewhat affordable, I really had no plan on how to get there. Now, after months of planning, emailing, and running around UVM’s campus trying to get answers about credit transfers and financial aid, I am finally a week away from departure. Is my heart beating almost uncomfortably fast? Yes, I am scared. If it was a short duration I know my hands wouldn’t sweat when I think about going, but six months away from home… this is a lot for me. So bring it on sunny new england summer days! As I soak up the sun here, the wintery days roll in to Dunedin. I am excited, I am scared, I am anticipating an amazing time.

I am always ready for a grand adventure, snowboard in hand!

Colorado is fun! fun! fun!

Well! I just returned from nationals out in Copper CO.  It was an amazing trip!  15 of us from the UVM Snowboard team shacked up in a sweet house in Frisco…  We rode hard everyday, all day.  The day of the women’s open class was welcomed with ridiculous weather!  Blizzard conditions lead to barely ridable slopestyle terrain.  Needless to say, the comp wasn’t fun to ride in, but it was AWESOME being there.  Now I am home, thrown back into a life of homework and hour drives to the mountain… but boy it is nice to sleep in my own bed.  check out my facebook account for pictures from the journey… my “add pictures” application on here is currently not working! :P

days of homework

snuggled up in bed am i. hehe yoda.

While not as much snow has fallen as I initially thought would over night, there is still a respectable amount covering the ground.  Fortunatly it meant I didnt have to go into work. In doing research for work today I watched a really interesting video which I highly suggest: http://www.storyofstuff.com/  it is about 20 mins long but really fascinating.  USASA is over! I finished up the season with 3 golds, yaaah clean sweep!

I have been doing alot of traveling lately to different mountains around New England.  Thankfully this weekend I have off to play around at Stowe.  The excitement is over flowing! I like riding at Stowe.  Josh, the other Liquid chromie rides there too!

Well, it is back to homework… then out shredding.

Peace and Love,

Tahoe to home

And so UVM vacation is over.  School has started and I am already up to my neck in work.  What a bother.  Now that  I am back on the east coast I have been riding at Stowe.  We actually had competitions over the weekend and I snagged gold at both.  woot woot!

Lets talk about tahoe. 73″ of the most beautiful snow you have ever seen.  After many head bumps on the ceiling of our treefort house and scorpions in the deep snow I was  ready for a days rest… but certainly not ready to come home.  In the airport I ran into tanner pendleton and brandon reese… they are moving to tahoe.  I am envious from my head to my toes!

To check out a few images from tahoe look me up on facebook at UVM

TAHOE GET READY BECAUSE HERE I COME~!

Two more days until north star feels the wrath of me and my wee little Bataleon snowboard! YAH!

The past few weeks have been filled with wondrous adventures of hiking, tele skiing, and christmas cheer, (and snowboarding!). Christmas day brought icey slopes and terrifying tele turns as my older brother desperately tried to get me psyched on free-healed skiing. It was really fun and a great way to spend the holiday, but I think I may stick to snowboarding.

I am in West Chester PA spending a week playing in the Poconos… (well, really lounging around excitedly awaiting my winter tahoe excursion.) Eddie and I zipped up to Big Boulder in east central PA for a day of shredding. Between their three parks they had some seriously progressive terrain. Eddie was bold enough to compare the last jump in their large park to the super kicker in Mammoths Main park… Yes indeed you heard it here… Big Boulder is pumping up the east coast riding to new heights.

As I am writing this Eddie has been listing off the snow accumulation around the U.S. with an excited air.  Although Tahoe will be a snowy heaven, my heart is in Stowe’s winter wonderland of tree labyrinths.  There is no place I would rather be when it snows than ducking into the thick glades at Stowe with Eddie and my team at UVM.

Today it is a wopping 45*f in Chadds Ford PA and we are far away from any signs of snow.  We drove to the back hills to explore  an area that had once been stomping ground for some of PAs finest skiiers… Chadds Peak; about 200 feet of pure glory.  It was sad to see an area which had once  been a thriving ski resort to have grown back in and become just another pretty slope in a sea of hills.  Maybe one day the climate will balance back out and we will once again be able to play in the southern hills of Pennsylvania.

…now back to lobster bisque :)

Wednesday is a day of plentiful snow!

mmmm! Whole wheat banana cranberry pancakes! OH YEAH! The snow is still falling here on central NH.  Beautiful, light snow. I love days like today… I cant drive any where so today is a relaxing day off.  We may go romp around Laconia and film urban sessions… it would be a delightful way to spend this wednesday.

oh politics, seek out Bush’s speech from the while house this morning.  He’s a winner… hahaha

Christmas Vaca

well, its vacation again!  I am back in New Hampshire for a while.  The UVM Snowboard Team has been tearing up the hills of Stowe Mountain Resort for the past few weeks.  The snow has been unbelievable!  Waist deep powder already! ON THE EAST COAST! It’s out of control.   It has been really fun training at Stowe so far.  They have six jumps up and a whole plethora of rails to session.  Rocking out in the new Liquid gear has been really silly too, people have been digging the full 70’s style green couch print.  I love it! I

In Burlington we were hit with a storm that left us pretty well snowed in.  But nothing could stop us from urban sessioning.  A few good comrades and I drove around Burlington performing random acts of kindness (diggging people out of snowbanks) and towing each other into enormous urban snow hips!  It was a great day!  We retired back to our little home and spent the rest of the evening reminiscing and watching old snowboard movies… (some of them had never seen After Lame…)  WHHHHATT! I know! That movie shaped the way we ride today!

I hear there is snow in the forecast again! YIPPEEE!  Well, I am off to buy jelly beans (not for me!)  I will write again soon… hopefully after another epic session.

And so fall is here…

I woke up and the leaves had fallen, crunchy and brown. The foliage is a beautiful quilt of gold and red.   This can only mean that winter is right around the bend.  Thus far I have not been able to shred and it has been killing me!  It was my intention to get to school, do a little work and hit up as many rail jams as possible.  However, life has gotten the best of me and school has consumed all of my time.  I have been skating the bowl at the Burton Flagship store.  It is a glorious piece of fiber board.  The snowboard team is really taking shape again this year.  Weighing in at 92 members we are an army of fun.  This winter will bring so many new surprises and talented riders.  I can’t wait!
